In the morning we drive from Ljubljana to Pivka. Here we visit the Eco Museum of the intermittent lakes of Pivka and the Park of Military History. Next, we take a short ride to the village of Kal and have a guided tour of the Šobčeva domačija farmstead. Martin Krpan himself will welcome us and show us the famous black kitchen and a spahnjenca, a typical rural engineering structure of the area, which has a stone-covered roof. In the spahnjenca we’ll be served a home-made snack. Afterwards we visit the old Jerčin house and two stone chapels. Having learnt about the heritage of the rural civil engineering of the larger area, we head to the Ravne mansion, named after the noble Ravignani family of Tuscany.
After lunch in one of the Pivka inns we visit Šilentabor and the remains of Tabor, one of the mightiest castles at the time, built in defence against the Otomans by the Ravignani family, the church of St Matin, known for the alluring frescoes and the stunning views over the Pivka valley (Mt Sveta Trojica, Mt Vremščica, the lakes). In the afternoon we return to Ljubljana.
