Ljubljana
06:00
The regions of Bela krajina and Dolenjsko lie in the southeastern part of Slovenia. The Bela krajina region is a diverse, tranquil area, historically known as the region of White Carniola. It may have been named after the white linen textile which had been produced there, but many believe the name is related to the white slender birch trees that give the landscape its characteristic grace. Today the visitors can choose from a number of entertainment possibilities and many decide to prolong their stay due to the hospitality of the people and suitable accommodation facilities. Moreover, the Kolpa river offers adrenaline activities to sports enthusiasts or a quiet break to those who like to take it easy.
Bus departs from Ljubljana at 6.00 am. We drive past Novo mesto to the Bela krajina region and our first stop is at the Veliki Nerajec village to visit the Lahinja river landscape park. This area has several protected natural and cultural monuments of historical significance, as well as two natural reserves. A number of karst phenomena can be found here, for example Zjot cave, a cave with a sinkhole pond and a limestone hall covered in crystal formations. A walk through this natural reserve shows a replica of a house, or rather a home of the past, as well as some items of craftmanship, still alive today.
A short drive to the Žuniči village brings us to Šokčev dvor, a typical homestead with enclosed courtyard. Protected by the wall all around, save for one single entrance, the farm consists of a house, a shed and a barn.
After traditional lunch we drive to the village of Dolenjske Toplice, (the name suggests we have reached the Dolenjsko region), and visit the Plavica farm, where Jože, the herbalist, will show us his farm of 400 herb species and introduce some natural products containing extracts and beneficial essences of the plants. Our last stop is Paha and Matjaževa domačija farmhouse, a 150-year-old-country house, where we indulge in wine tasting and home made treats, which is a perfect ending to our tour. In the evening we return to Ljubljana.
