Postojna Cave offers an unprecedented wealth of various shapes and colours of stalagmites and stalactites in a web of 24 kilometers of subterranean passages, galleries and chambers. Visited by emperors, kings, presidents and other 38 million visitors since 1818, when it was discovered, Postojna Cave is certainly interesting for all family members who are old enough to walk. After lunch we continue with quite a recent attraction: a military park with genuine military artefacts, established less than three decades ago. A real submarine is irresistible to the boys of all ages and the girls will want to play, too. Explore and experience!
Bus departs at 6:00 am from Ljubljana. We make a stop on a highway before we arrive to Postojna and Postojna Cave. We get ready for a ninety-minute tour of the cave with a constant temperature of less than 10 degrees Celsium. Travelling through underground tunnels and halls by a train in a railway almost 4 kilometers long enables us to see the full extent and the powerfull force of the geological past, which has formed this unique cave. Surprisingly, there are plants and animals which thrive here, the most famous is the Proteus, referred to as baby dragon, and we ‘ll find out why.
After lunch at Jamski dvorec restaurant we visit the Military History Park in Pivka, which is just a short ride away. Based on the rich military and historical heritage of the area, the park is a museum and experience center with a circular trail along the exhibits. For a snack and some refreshments we stop at Pri Andrejevih homestead, before we head back to Ljubljana.
